Custom Capacitive Touch Membrane Keypads

Custom capacitive touch keypads are available from Technigraphics in as little as 5 – 10 working days! Our capacitive touch keypads offer excellent durability, sealed construction, no moving parts, and offer a more modern look and feel vs. traditional membrane Keypads. These capacitance switches can be produced using front graphic surfaces such as thick hardcoated acrylic, safety glass, and also provide the option to design slider or wheel-type controls.

Custom Capacitive Touch Membrane Switches

A capacitive touch keypad consists of one or more capacitive buttons. The capacitive buttons/sensors can be printed on a polyester film using conductive ink, or can be copper pads on a PCB. These sensors are connected to the Fast Touch™ IC. When a button is pressed, the IC measures the increase in capacitance and triggers a response.

The main advantage of these capacitive touch buttons is that there are no mechanical moving parts, which will eventually wear out.   These capacitive sensors are placed underneath any non-conductive overlay material such as AR-1 Acrylic, thick polyester and hardcoated polycarbonate, and ABS Plastic, making them virtually indestructible. This construction is also very easy to clean, which makes it a good choice for medical applications.

Types of Capacitive Touch Keypads

The following are the two types of capacitive touch interfaces we specialize in:

  • Film-based Capacitive Keypads - A film based capacitive keypad has capacitive buttons/sensors on a polyester film with a tail, which must connect to the driver electronics via a ZIF connector. Our rapid prototype process uses film based keypads because we can digitally manufacture the sensors and the graphics. This keypad can then be driven by our universal driver electronics. This provides an accelerated capacitive keypad development by removing all of the complex software and hardware design requirements. This patent pending process gives our customers the ultimate advantage when it comes to speed of delivery and product development.
  • PCB-based Capacitive Keypads - In a PCB based capacitive keypad, the capacitive touch sensors are copper pads on a PCB.   There is no need for a ZIF connector in this kind of design since the capacitive touch buttons can directly be connected to the Fast Touch™ IC. Both Film and PCB-based capacitive keypads can be constructed with or without a graphic overlay. They can be mounted behind a clear plastic layer such as polycarbonate, or acrylic.  

Although Technigraphics focuses on the film based capacitive touch technology, our design partner can design your PCB-based Capacitive Keypads using the Fast Touch™ IC. If you prefer to integrate the Fast Touch™ IC into your own main PCB due to space constraints, we recommend our fee-based consultation that makes this integration of the Fast Touch™ IC into your PCB fast and easy.

 

System Requirements

What do we need to get started?

  • Graphic Requirements - The artwork for your overlay defines how you want your capacitive keypad to look.   It specifies type styles, colors, sizes, any logos or special symbols, etc. For graphic files we prefer vector (such as .cdr or .ai) files in the native format in which the file was created.     For specifying colors we prefer Pantone Matching System color specifications. Generally, we can match the colors you require, however for our rapid prototype service we cannot guarantee this. It is important to note that matching overlay colors to surrounding components is difficult. For this reason we advise you to specify contrasting color combinations to avoid mismatched components.  

  • Mechanical Rquirements - The dimensions of your keypad include length, width, tail length (from the edge of the part) and thickness or stack-up.  We will help you determine the tail exit point.

  • Material Requirements - Technigraphics offers glossy and textured polyester films as well as several thicknesses of acrylic. These films have been designed specifically for the graphic overlay film on touch interfaces. Both product ranges are printable on the reverse side and they are solvent and chemical resistant on the top side.
